Merle and I visited Banff, Canada, with travel days on each end, but adventures June 17-21, 2024
Merle wanted to go there, and until she made her request, I didn't know where it was either.
June 17, Monday
We had a little hiccup on the way with a plane delay, and made it to our hotel about midnight.
Next am we were able to see that we had a view of the Bow River!
First order or business: practice making funny faces.
We decided to start with the Visitor Center to get our bearings, got our ticket for the Roam bus (gray hair = senior discount...woo hoo!), and made a plan for the day.
We decided to visit Johnston Canyon.
The running water made Merle want to pee....
:-o
The canyon, which was made by running water, had lower and upper falls.
I named this one:
"Are we there yet?"
I had to wonder how the earliest discoverers would explore this place with vertical canyon walls, before the nice people came along later to build the sturdy walkways for us visitors.
We eventually found the lower falls.
Merle shows how the water has eroded a trough in the rock.
We hiked on further to the upper falls, where the line to see them was quite long.
People would get to the end of the walkway (arrow) and the upper falls were to the left.
While in line, we noted a cave in the rocks (how does that form? and who lives in there?)
And Merle noted she'd be disappointed if the upper falls was the trickle (red arrow) she was pointing to.
It was eventually our turn to take a picture at the upper falls. Very beautiful...but as we looked, were also aware of the line of peeps behind us.
After this hike, we returned to town for some Indian food and looking around.
They say that if you don't like the weather in Banff, wait five minutes. Sunny in the pics above, then snowed in the evening.
